Why Millions of Class Members Got Nothing
Direct notice in a class action goes to the people the defendant’s records can identify with a current address. Apple knows the serial number and purchase date of every iPhone it sold, but it does not always know where the buyer lives now, and a phone bought through a carrier, a big-box retailer or a third-party seller may be tied to an email address the buyer stopped using. The court-approved notice program therefore has two layers: direct notice where Apple’s records allow it, and published notice for everyone else. Published notice is the reason the settlement website exists and the reason the claim form does not require a Claim ID.
The people most likely to be missed are the ones most likely to give up: buyers who changed email addresses, moved, bought through a carrier, or bought a phone for a family member. All of them are in the class if the model and the purchase date fit.
What the No-Claim-ID Path Asks For
The first screen at SmartphoneAISettlement.com asks whether you have a Claim ID and PIN. Choose the option for filing without one. From there the form is identical to the one a notified class member sees: name, mailing address, email, phone, and then one piece of information that identifies the iPhone.
The primary field is the serial number, found on the phone under Settings, General, About, on the barcode label of the box, or on the receipt. If the serial number is gone, check the box on the form and provide instead the Apple Account email address and the phone number that were used with the iPhone during the class period. The administrator matches either set of details against the purchase records Apple provided under the settlement, so no receipt, no order confirmation and no notice are required.
Who Is Owed
The class is U.S. residents who bought one of seven models new, in the United States, for use rather than resale, between June 10, 2024 and March 29, 2025: the iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max and 16e. The lawsuit, Landsheft v. Apple Inc., alleges those phones were marketed around Siri Apple Intelligence features that did not ship and were later delayed. Apple denies the allegations and the settlement is not an admission of wrongdoing.
Two purchase-date traps catch people who think they qualify. A 15 Pro bought before June 10, 2024, including every one sold at its September 2023 launch, is outside the class. Any iPhone 16 bought after March 29, 2025 is outside it too.
What It Pays and When
$25 per eligible device is the notice’s starting figure. It rises pro rata toward a $95 ceiling if few people claim, and falls below $25 if many do, after attorneys’ fees, costs and service awards come out of the $250 million fund. Each phone is a separate claim. Online claimants can be paid by check, PayPal, Venmo or direct deposit. No payment date is set: the final approval hearing is February 24, 2027 in San Jose federal court, and money moves only after the ruling and any appeals.
If You Did Get a Claim ID
Enter it. The form pre-fills from Apple’s records and the claim is faster to validate. A notice is not required to be paid, but a Claim ID is not something to throw away either, and a second household phone that got no notice can still be claimed through the other path.
